Windows vs Linux

When choosing a web hosting package you have 2 main options regarding which operating system your server runs on. Both options are highly flexible and can run the majority of websites, however there are some subtle differences.

Windows is widely known for its desktop operating systems and its server versions are very similar.

Windows servers will run the Microsoft IIS web server software.

Windows servers have the benefit of running the .NET platform, which is a very popular system for developing complex applications and websites.

This allows support for the ASP and ASP.NET web scripting languages.

Windows servers also support MSSQL, Microsoft’s own database server.

The main downside of windows servers is the additional cost involved in paying license fees to Microsoft.

Linux is the operating system of choice for the majority of web servers since it is an open-source software that is free to use. There are hundreds of different versions of linux, each with their own unique strengths and flaws. The version of Linux we use is Ubuntu Server which is known for its reliability, security and ease of use.

Linux servers generally run Apache web server which is also free, reliable and secure.

Our linux servers support both Python and Ruby on Rails, providing developers with a powerful system to build dynamic websites. They also support the Postgre SQL database system.

Generally the choice of operating system should be determined by the system specific features you are after. If you need ASP.NET go for windows, if you need Ruby on Rails then pick Linux.  Otherwise if you are looking for a lower cost solution then Linux is probably the choice for you.
